This year, our instructional design team partnered with faculty on several innovative projects through the Change 1 Thing initiative! Reach out to our Instructional Designers to discuss your class today!
We're excited to showcase some of the outstanding outcomes from these collaborations:
Dr. Jeremy Stalker MSC 306 Marine Geology
Instructional Designer – Dr. John Pauls
“I need to develop new activities using computer interfaces. The course already has plenty of "hands on" work with the labs and rock specimens. I would love to integrate some Google Earth or GIS components and video interaction to the laboratories. The students need and skills are changing. I need to change with them.”- Dr. Stalker
The solution: Create an interactive map simulation with coordinates and enhanced video and content presentation.
Dr. Annmarie Kent-Willette Strategic Social Media
Instructional Designer – Dr. John Pauls
“For this project, I worked with Dr. Kent-Willette to identify strategic improvement and enhancement for her Strategic Social Media course. The problem identified was lack of mastery in effective social media search-engine optimization and adherence to established norms for social media growth and marketing. The proposed solution was to create a custom AI-chatbot, embedded with Dr. Kent-Willette’s insights and work, to act as a coach and editor during the content development process.”- Dr. Pauls
Dr. Steven Davis EDU 102 Human Development
Instructional Designer – Dr. John Pauls
“I have my students do a group project in this course aimed at showing their knowledge, skills, and insights about how to design an outdoor game fitting with a stage of human development that they have chosen. There are three parts to the project at this point, the game is part 2. I would like to improve the planning and execution of the games, but I also think there is room to improve the introductory part 1 and wrap-up part 3. The project requires teaming to produce handouts for the groups' audience, sharing sessions, and then activities that fit with the information, especially for part 2 and the outdoor game. I would like to enhance their work sessions, but definitely how they do presentational things in class.”- Dr. Davis
Solution: Students create their own websites using Canva that houses materials, information, and insight to be used when presenting during this project, with the objective of the change to create processes that enhances content presentation skills, digital literacy, and fostering effective collaboration and group communication skills.
Peter Bohn ENGR 112 Engineering Design and Fabrication
Instructional Designer – Dr. Catherine Rushton
This project focused on developing interactive activities to better prepare engineering students for working in the Maker Space. The activities provide an overview of basic safety guidelines, identify key components of various machines, and include a 360-degree virtual reality tour of the Maker Space. Students also respond to questions about procedures specific to using the Maker Space.
Tiffany Donley HLSC 310 Healthcare Ethics
Instructional Designer – Dr. Catherine Rushton
This interactive “whodunit” activity engages students in applying their knowledge of ICD-10 coding through an immersive murder mystery scenario. As students answer questions, they unlock clues to ultimately identify the perpetrator and solve the case.
Lauren Holloway NUR 436 Community Health Nursing Theory
Instructional Designer – Dr. Catherine Rushton
This interactive map activity is designed to help undergraduate nursing students develop a global understanding of major non–sexually transmitted communicable diseases by geographic region while strengthening critical thinking and public health perspectives. Through immersive, location-based content, students explore real-world case studies using videos, infographics, and concise readings embedded at each destination.
Dr. Arpita Jadav Business Statistics
Instructional Designer – Nili Cimand
This project involved the creation of two introductory videos designed to serve as a foundational resource that breaks down essential statistical terms and vocabulary into easily digestible segments. By using clear visual explanations and practical context, the videos help students bridge the gap between abstract mathematical theory and real-world business applications.
Dillon Hanson Mathematics Linear Algebra
Instructional Designer – Nili Cimand
"Much of the vocabulary in linear algebra is tough to understand through the definition alone. Visualizing and manipulating vectors in one's head is also extremely challenging! Immersive learning allows the student to physically manipulate vectors in a way that will actually make the definitions resonate." -Dillon Hanson
Brian Palmer DANC 318 Dance History and Criticism II
Instructional Designer – Nili Cimand
Students created their own podcasts using the RØDECaster Pro II in the Digital Media Lab in the Swisher Library. By shifting the focus from pages of essays to the airwaves, students learned how to simplify complex ideas so a listener can follow along without a visual aid. They navigated roles like researcher, scriptwriter, host, and sound engineer, fostering teamwork and project management.
